26 million people around the world read the American weekly news magazine, Time. Time magazine has been around since 1923 and has always had their finger on the pulse of the most important and controversial issues of the time. From Ellen Degeneres first coming out to OJ Simpson and everything in between, Time magazine was never afraid to go there.
In 1997, Ellen DeGeneres came out of the closet and made national news. DeGenerous opened up in her Time magazine article about her coming out experience. She shared, “I hate that term ‘in the closet. Until recently I hated the word lesbian too. I’ve said it enough now that it doesn’t bother me. But lesbian sounded like somebody with some kind of disease. I didn’t like that, so I used the word gay more often.”
